Going over: Hydrangea. 10 x 8 inches. Personal project, using flowers from my local florist, Hunter Florist in Saint James's Street, Brighton, that are 'going over'. Flowers have long been used as a subject by painters as a symbol of memento mori, Latin for 'remember you must die'. It was a comment on the rich merchants who were commissioning the paintings, to say to them that it didn't matter how much wealth they had acquired and, by commissioning a painting, were showing off, we all end up as dust. Flowers are dead once they are picked. I find a fragile beauty in these flowers, no longer sellable and destined for the bin.
